My Ride: Arrived 3 June 2005: 2005 545i - Orient Blue, Black interior, Sport, Steptronic, Cold Weather, NAV, Sirius, Logic7, Comfort Seats, Sunshades. What a glorious ride!

Just read my copy of "Inside Track" (the insert that comes with my monthly lease invoice from BMWNA). It states in the "Car tips" section the following:

"For safety and handling reasons, BMW does not recommend rotating the tires. The possible benefit of slightly improved tire wear will be negatively offset by reduced traction while the tire 'wears in' in its new location. Additionally, some BMW vehicles are equipped with different tire sizes on the front and rear tires."

This was published as a correction of "certain information in the May and June 2006 Car tips columns" that "was incorrect."

Yes, I do have too much time on my hands to be reading these inserts!

Read the same insert. They also mentioned that rotating tires won't significantly increase the life of the tire. This contradicts everything I've ever read. Any thoughts

I wonder what will happen if I rotate my stagered wheels? well the 550 rims should come standard on 525. they handle so much better. its not even close to the original 525 rims. I can take any corner without ars, but with ars speed! its great but I do feeel that the rear is wearing more than the front. I wish I could put 275 in the front if it fits. would it handle a lot better? I never ever tried this, but was alwaaaaays wonddering.

i do rotate my tires. And yes they always disagree with me in the dealer.
Between 9.000/10.000 kms i will change the rear to the front.
I will get around 45.000/50.000 kms from one tire set.

I read this too. An acceptable quirk for me. And it possibly explains why a lot of us have problems with new tires that go away once they are worn in.

Here is my take on it - compounds in the tires are compressed in a certain way once the tires are on the car and mounted on a specific axle/place on a car. After 10K km/7K miles your tires are compressed the same way every time, warm up same way most of the time, rotate at certain speeds and angles, and componds and materials the tires are made of work the same way. Then you change all that - you mount the tires on different corners, you subject them to different pressures, speeds, compressions, etc - they start their disintegration. And I'm not even talking about loss of traction, etc. I never rotate my tires, cause IMO its not worth additional 3-5 K miles you could get from the tires, even of its true, which I doubt too.

My dealer rotated the wheels today mainly to get the one which was more difficult to balance on the rear axle.

I think the main risk with rotation is only if the camber settings are different between front and rear axles - only then could the wear pattern after rotation be a significant issue.

Out of curiosity - can anyone point to camber, toe and castor settings for the E60?
