Tire pressure monitors
As I understand it, there's nothing in the tire or wheel. The car's computer measures variations in each wheel's rotational speed (similar to ABS) to sense a flat tire (i.e. flat tire = smaller diameter = faster rotation for given vehicle speed).

The old 7 series system used sensors in the wheels
The newwer systems like on the E60 detect a change in the rolling diameter of the wheel via the DSC/ABS sensors
So you can fit any wheels and just reset the system

Also the e39 had this system called Reifen Druck Control or RDC based upon sensors in the wheels.

Thanks guys! I had a C5 Corvette and it had these sensor things where the valve stem goes inside the wheel, so I figured the BMW had a similar system.
I have to say, although you can't see the PSI I prefer the BMW system.
