I still have my original RFT on my 2004 530i. I see quite a bit of cracking in/on/around the tread. Should I be worried about this? I know the RFT compound is a harder compound so maybe this is normal. I understand the tires are 6 years old and i don't like them at all, but, if i can get some more wear out of them (maybe this summer) i'd like to.

The wear is still 1/2 or a little less.

If y'all suggest i replace them, what is a good tire? And before everyone jumps on me for not doing my research on tirerack, bimmerforums, bimerfest, e60.net, bmwcca, and every other site, understand this...I have read tons of info and would like some comments about possible tires for those of you who live in the northern climates.

Info on my driving: Daily driver. I run hard more than not, but, with that being said i would rather not replace tires every 2 years. I've heard good things about the Nexen, General, Yokohoma, and Michelins. It seems like all the reviews have run together and no one has made comments about living in the cooler climates.

Thoughts? Thanks everyone.

Jon

Need to replace your tires. The life span on tires is only 6 years from manufacturing date of your tires. You can see this on your sidewall ,older tires have it in the inner side. It is a 4 digit engraved, for example 5208, this will mean it was made on the 52nd week of the year 2008. Another thing is if it is already cracking, it means it already suffered dry rot. Blow out tires are usually caused by dry rotting on tires. In conclusion Need to replace your tires.

Yeah, time to replace. It's dangerous. You either can get some now or when they blow out going...mph.

Anyway, are you going to be running a dedicated winter set up? If so, you'll need to look at both summer and winter tires.

We'd don't get enough snow where I live to justify the switch, so I went with Michelin PS All-Seasons.

Let us know...

I would definetly go with a highly rated all season, like the Michilin PS's.Tire Rack has a good write up on this tire.If you can afford some blizzak's/alpine's or other snow tires, go that route for sure...obviously snow tires on a RWD car would be your safest bet if you can pull it off. I had them on a 330i I had and they are magic. Good luck man!

I'd take a shot at seeing if the manufacturer would give some allowance on a replacement set because of sidewall cracking since you are a low mileage driver (even though 6 years is a long time).

That is why some tire stores will not even touch a tire that is over x years old. They have that in writing. They are afraid it will injury an employee. Now, I don't know how they sell you a tire, more specifically how they remove that tire. Heck, as long as they are making revenue, I guess they will remove the old one.

More specifically, they will not put air in an old tire.
The will not spin balance it.
I guess as long as they are letting the air out, they are ok with it.
They just will not fill up an old tire.

The worst they can do is hang up on you.

I'd call twice - since the first answer may be "no"!

At looked at Tire Rack but even the pro-rated road hazard warranty costs extra. When you add that and the transportation charge I found Discount Tire and Tire Rack pricing pretty much a "wash".

As for tire recommendations, Tire Rack has a nice feature where you can see the reviews by make of car. As a result, I went with the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S. With full free replacement road hazard warranty at Discount Tire they still came in less than the cost for the Michelin Pilot Spot AS tires. I've only had them on for a few hundred miles but so far the handling has been excellent and I am really pleased with how quiet and comfortable riding they are. I will point out that I am NOT an overly aggressive driver.
