Default Timing chain

Hi Guys

On m54b30, i believe it has timing chain rather than a belt.

Does it need replacing periodically ?

It is 135K kilometer (or 85K miles) on the clock and 2005 model year car.

No rattling sound at the moment.

Thank you

Emre

Your M54B30 has a timing chain and should never need to be replaced. The last BMW engines with timing belts were the M20 engines, and they haven't been produced since 1993.

Thank you KyleB
At a different forum, one F10 520d ownee (with 184ps at around 100K km on the clock) gets broken timing chain at the motorway and so the engine broke so badly and got engine replaced at a huge cost. A day earlier he just hears engine rattling noise but delays timing chain replacement at the dealer.

So i was afraid if i experience the same. I believe these are the different type of engines obviously and i no need to worry at all.

BMW did a recall on N20 and N26 engines for multiple failed timing chains. Several other BMW engines ('N' series) have had timing chain failures. N63s have timing chain failures, N47s have timing chain failures, the list goes on. It is absolutely unacceptable for a company whose middle name literally is "motor".

Be happy that you have a BMW built before the bean-counters took over. BMW is not the company it used to be.
