Does anyone else agree that BMW is moving in the wrong direction?
24 years ago, I first considered buying a BMW. I bought a 1983 Toyota Supra. DOC very sweet 6 and wonderfully tuned suspension. The then 3 series was still more expensive, smaller engine less comfortable car. (BTW, I have always driven a manual) I then left the country and drove various Fiats, regattas, Unos, uno Turbo, Hondas and a 1968 MGB roadster. I first fell in love with the 5er when a friend asked me to help transport a black 1985 E28. The handling, balance and silky smooth 6 and slick shifting manual left an impression after an hour of driving that stuck with me.

I could not justify the 3er again in 1990 over a Honda Accord EX. The Accord was larger, more spacious, more comfortable and although lacking the balance and plagued with FWD under-steer, the car had a great 5 spd transmission a very smooth engine and would cruise steadily at 110 mph.

I consider myself a Beemer fan and a driving enthusiast. The involvement I enjoy in rowing my own in daily driving cannot be replaced by a tighter suspension. BMW is giving me everything I want in the 5er. I like the silky smooth engine, the more comfortable ride on the straight and the flat cornering only when I need it and the convenience of active steering. Obviously should I choose to track regularly I would want a lighter car with a stiffer suspension and softer tires. (but my Supra had after market coils and springs from TRD and I remember how that car handled on rails but gave me a butt ache). If you want the purists BMW, the M3 is available, as are E39 M5s and Z cars.

The 550i that I just ordered is a far cry from any vehicle on the lots at MBZ and Lexus dealers. BMW may have changed their course, but they are not heading toward the competition.
