Twice in a role I got the "Tighten Gas Cap" message while driving after I filled up the tank. I still got the message even after I stopped the engine, opened the gas cap and re-tighten it. Is there a special way to tighten the gas cap ?

Interesting. The cap on my car clicks only 1 time once the seal is tight; almost analogous to a torque wrench click once the desired torque is achieved. Once the click is reached, you can't turn the cap any further and it will not click more than once ... like those multi-clicking, ratchety fuel caps found on Hondas/Acuras.

+1 ... this is how it works on my car.

It is interesting to note that there appear to be dodgy seals on some of these filler caps. I was cleaning the car a couple of days ago and noticed traces of engine oil sitting in and around the engine oil filler on the engine block. Took it straight into the dealer, they gave me a new cap, problem solved - no more engine oil outside the engine. I guess it's just one more thing that we would want to keep a regular eye on.

I am now getting this message at various times on my '04 as well. I suspect that the rubber gasket around the gas cap is simply getting old and not sealing as well anymore. Of course the last time I was at the dealer I asked them to look at it and of course they could duplicate. Guess I'll have buy a new cap myself to stop the message...

My fuel cap has one click after tightening too. Is this "message thing" applicable to non-US models? I don't seem to recall reading any of this in the manual.

all our caps tighten to one click. what i meant was, after that one click, you release and turn the cap again, and release and turn the cap again.

There is a tank leak. Don't you hate new technology? Imagine with the older cars you'd never know you had a leak, so you wouldn't worry about it. Now you can't sleep after you find out something is wrong.
1) Check your gas cap.
2) Check for leaks under the R/R wheelhouse
3) Check for leaks in the fuel hoses

I found a leak in my tank vent valve, and that fixed the problem. I highly suspect the tank vent valve.

Good luck!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I believe this is happening to a lot of e60s out there.
