I actually noticed the oposite. The noise went away when the AC was on. The ticking and rattle were present only when it was off.
mine ticks when the ac is on and when the ac is off.

Try turning the AC on. If the noise goes away, you've found the culprit.

Thats what mine did........

For the last time, the AC does not have to be on for the compressor pulley to make the clicking noise. The pulley is turning whether the compressor clutch is engaged or not. The pulley with click differently as a function of loading.

Bimmertime,

Has the clicking noise been happening at idle or when you are stepping on the throttle? Does this happen at a certain rpm? My 550 has developed a "clicking" also, but I only noticed it recently while driving in manual/sport and it only happens between 3300 - 4000 rpm. My 550 only has 13k miles on it. Suggestions anyone?

It is very wierd. the clicking sometimes clicks for about 20 minutes even when I am driving, you here the clicking in the background as you push the gas. The other day it lasted for about 30 minutes. That's ridiculous. If I were you I would probably take it to the dealer, let them check it out, but be very informative, so they know you know what your talking about. And tell them to diagnose the problem. Trust me the ticking will most likely come back.

For the past few months my engine has been making a ticking noise, and man it is pretty annoying and loud. The other day I took my car to get serviced and complained about it, so the dealer says they did a bleed test on the hva. And I told my service advisor this was not good enough and that I think the noise would come back and it did.

A few days later it was ticking again, I timed the ticking it ticked for about 20 minutes in my garage and while I was driving it you could hear the noise in the background for an additional 10 minutes. 30 total minutes of frustration. This is ridiculous, how long can this go on for I have to get it fixed. So I take my car back leave it there, I get a shity mini van in return the service advisor calls me up and says I checked your vehicle out and it has not been ticking. I can't belive my ears. I told him i did not pay money for my car to tick and m,ake loud noises, he returns and says yeah its just a ticking noise. Wow I wanted to curse him out, @#$$%^^@%^. I replied I didn't pay 50k for this noise, fix it.

My car is still at the dealer what should I do? They are telling me its not ticking but I think thier full of shit. Aby body got any suggestions. Thank you ramiz

i really dont know how is works in the US, but over here, if u send a complaint to BMW in germany, they get really banged.... why dont you try that?

I think I have the same problem on my 04 525i.
When I start up the car, any time of the day, whether it's cold or warm, when the it's idling my engine sounds like a diesel engine, or like an engine that's giving out, but as soon as I step on the throttle, the sound goes away. My guess is, it's one of the pulleys (AC, Water pump...etc).

Any suggestions ???
