When I turn the key off, I hear a few thumps as the engine stops, like thud-thud-thud-thud. I don't remember that happening before. Should I be worried? Is it like a flywheel stopping, something in the transmission?

Any new sound like that would bother me. Can you reproduce it on demand? If so, time to make a service appointment, IMO.

Happens every time. It happened at delivery in Munich. It has been shown to the BMW dealership in ROME, who showed me another car doing the same thing and said it was normal. My local dealer said the same thing. Its normal.

What is it? It is the transmission casing banging against the body when the engine experiences run on.

I think it has something to do with heating and AC. Mine have Webasto diesel stand-by heater what makes all kind of noises whe starting and stopping. I think we have at least as many electrical motors as we have computers in our cars.

Sounds strange. Try this: from a stop, engage the clutch in reverse, then quickly push in the clutch pedal. You should hear a muffled rattle from the transmission. Does the thumping sound like this? If so, it's probably nothing to worry about - sounds like the engine is just running a little rough at shut-off, and rattling a bit. If it's a different sound, I'd take it into the best dealer in your area.

My car is dead quiet when I shut it off. Sounds like it's a run-on problem after shut-off. Do you have the 15.2 software?

Forward or reverse. Thats the sound. It bugged the hell out of me at first. Now I am used to it. Will the 15.2 software fix the run on? Any changes you experienced other than the Steering tighter? I thought throttle response was only related to Steptronics.

I've had the car since July, with no software updates. I'll try playing around with it in reverse as suggested and see. I don't mind it making noises, just so it isn't breaking itself!

Thanks for all the comments.

No need to go in reverse. Just idle forward in 1st gear. (transmission engaged, car going forward, foot off the gas) Now push in the clutch to the floor. The tranny wobbles as it disengages from the engine. While wobbling it hits the side of the body/chassis. This is the same noise that you hear with engine run-on on shut down.

I have had this for 8,700 miles and 3 software upgrades. Software may fix the run on, but the transmission mounts give enough that it kocks against the chassis. I guess its just a tight fit.

That thumping is just caused by the transmission/engine rattling due to loading. It is entirely normal, but the run-on should not happen IMO. I didn't have a run-on problem before the software, so I can't tell you. It might fix the problem, but if it doesn't, they should be able to adjust things to fix the run-on. Do you have any other issues with the engine - throttle response etc.?? The 15.2 rev changes I noticed were steering, RDS on FM now, and my BMW Motorola v70 phone echo problem has been solved.

I was also told by my dealer that there is a pin or some such device in cars with active steering that disengages and causes a noise.
