I have an 08 535i and have noticed a "thud" and slight jerk in the drivetrain a split-second after starting the engine. Appears to mostly happen on cold starts. Has anyone here experienced the same thing? Is this normal?

I've heard that thud before but never really thought about it as a threat. Since there's an SIB for it, i might consider it if i want to get my software updated. This can be a good excuse to use. Although, i'm also hesitating to get my software updated since BMW might have a newer progman that will limit the car's performance. They do this to discourage tuning.

Not sure if I have the same problem. Wrote about it once before. Mine has a thud right after starting enginge, and before ever engaging the automatic (2008 528). The 'thud' varies from slight, to so much that the vehicle jolts a little and sounds somewhat metallic, and it is coming from the transmission. I took it in and was told this "is normal", although I have never had a car do this. However, it was so 'normal', that a software fix was coming out in September. Why would there be a fix if it was normal?
More recently, I have noticed that when at a red light, that when you take your foot off the brake, that the vehicle sometimes does not move forward. It just sits there like it is neutral. Always before, and in every other case, the vehicle moves slightly forward when releasing the brake. This happens mostly at the first couple of lights after leaving home, than back to normal.
I will call back after Sept., but I am concerned there is something amiss somewhere, and better found under warrenty.

It could have some thing to do with the Hill hold to.
Have you tried the 25sec transmission reset yet? There are threads all over the board about it.

For those considering a software update you may want to think twice about it on a 535i. V: 29.1+ of the DMS software with the N54 motor has some issues

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147781
it's up to about page 81 now.

Lag city is all I got to say. If you can avoid the DMS update till BMWNA resolves the new issue they have caused, do so it's in your best intrest.

This is exactly what my 535 is doing. I noticed that if it was parked such that the parking gear is keeping the car from moving (as opposed to the emergency brake) the thud is almost unnoticeable upon start. Still debating whether or not to bring it in to the dealer to get the software updated if that indeed fixes the problem because of the negative aspects of the update that I have read on here. However, the thud/jerk can't be good for the car. Have you had the software update done to your car?

Thanks for the info. I did try the 25sec transmission reset after reading your post but unfortunately the thud/jerk is still there.

I checked with Bimmer for this SIB, but in fact mine 05 545i has a different engine. Do you know a similar SIB for 05 545i? Thanks!!

Sounds as if you may have backed over a jerk!!
