My friend (who has a Porsche Boxter + track prepared Caterham) has invited me to a track day were I would be mixing it with a combination of track prepared hot hatches and the odd Ferrari, MX5 and RX8.

I usually win Karting races (with work collegues) and fancied a go at racing but do not want to damage brake disks etc (RFT's may get wasted though). I also need to learn more about the rear wheel drive and keeping 600Nm of torque (had a re-map ) running through the rear wheels when I take on the twisties.

I dare not ask this question on the Track Day Forum as I would be totally embarrassed, but I don't mind asking fellow E60 members of their experiences going to a track day. I would like to see what hapens on a track.

However, if the advice is to not do it, I can still ride round in my friends (3.5 sec to 60) Caterham

save your car for the comfy high-ways and nice b-roads. even though BMW's are sporty cars a regular 5-seriers has absolutly nothing to do at a track.

I would never expose my car to such abuse...

If you want a car you can drive on and off tracks with no worry; buy an M3 og m5..

If you could just do one or two runs, for the fun of it, I'd say go for it.. but since I know different, for example, my husband races his truck often, and there is no such thing as just one or two runs, it gets addictive which of course leads to abuse. I haven't completely ruled it out yet for my car but even he comments that when he's in my car, he feels like it's too "nice" to be too agressive in it.

No, not unless you relish the idea, for example, of someone spinning in front of you and getting your car sand blasted and stoned. Of course, worse can happen. Insurance coverage? Not likely unless you can get some sort of special track insurance. But, don't tell your insurance company.

on topic: i say do it. where else could you test out your re-map safely with no other cars around you? but i wouldn't go all out and drive it like a rental. leave the hard driving to the boxster and caterham.

Just take your car to the track and have fun with it. Sure there is a little wear and tear, but nothing to worry about.

An e60 may not be a sports car, but that doesn't mean it can't be driven hard and aggressive. If it's your first time at the track, you will probably be focusing on your line and technique so your tires and brakes shouldn't see that much abuse.
