Hi everyone, long time no ... type?

Anyway, had the 535d for a year now. Still love it, but I'm thinking it's time for a change. I've had a good year, so am thinking either a new M5 (should be safe with that for a couple of years before F10 makes it in to M guise?), or a 6 / 12 month old Gallardo, F430 or DB9. This will be my only car though, so I'm not sure how practical the Gallardo or F430 would end up being for me. 95% of the time it's either just me in the car, or one passenger. But with three kids, occasionally I will need to drop off / pick up and carry school bags. DB9 does have rear seats but from what I've seen they are pretty useless, especially as the kids are growing up and getting tall.

Thought (briefly) about an RS6 or Merc S500 or one of the cheaper AMGs, but again they don't really do it for me. So I reckon the M5 is looking like the most viable option.

Anyway ... big question ... as I've been away for so long, is the M5 going to get the new iDrive with the built in hard drive? The current iDrive is SO outdated now. I have the Nav DVD with the UK postcodes in it, but it's just so damn slow - takes a good 2 to 3 minutes to type in a postcode and plan a route. So embarrasing when mate in his Fiesta punches a postcode in to his ?200 TomTom which routes in about 3 seconds. If we aren't going to see the HDD iDrive until the F10 comes out, I expect I'll end up moving away from BMW.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem. Couldn't decide whether or not to buy a GTR or a 911

Hi Russ,

The M5 would be the best everyday driver. It's fast, comfortable and has lot's of room. Compared to the other cars, it's also inconspicuous (that ca be an advantage, as well a disadvantage, that's up to you).

IMHO, the DB9 is the best-looking car. Unfortunately, you have to accept the low-finishing quality of the interior (although it looks great!). Sound of the V12 is also breath taking!

F430 would be the best sports car, but imo the wordt daily driver........

Anyway, I wish I had to deal with this 'problem'

First off, welcome back

Friends of mine here in Germany have ordered E60s and were told to wait until the "November build", because that's when the new iDrive system will be fitted to the 5er, i.e. the same one as they have just realeased in the facelift 3er. I therefore assume the M5 would also get the new iDrive system, however (unfortunately!) I am not to familiar with release dates on M cars compared to the normal BMW range.

For what you need, the M5 is naturally a great choice... however I would also have to think hard about the Maserati Quattroporte -- IMHO its just such a beautiful and classy car.

Happy shopping...

Hey DrLev99,

Why did sell your M5 to C? The last time I read your M5 thread was the day you drove the M5 home. Did a seacrh and couldn't find anything.
And why you chosen the 550I? Thanks.
