Not to complicate things, and considering your price range, this may be moot, but there was an engine change from the 04/05s to 06/07s. On the 530, it went from 225 to 255 HP. In 08 the 530 was dropped in the US and replaced with the LCI 535 at 300 HP.

In other words, you won't find any really significant engine difference usless you're comparing say 05/06 or 07/08, and so forth.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

I would suggest going with the 2005 because the 2004 was the first production year of the e60 so they did work out some bugs in the later models.
+1 on this. First MY always have a few bugs here and there so it's always nice to get the next model year. Just keep looking around and make sure you get the one you REALLY want and that has all the options you want. Don't compromise on price, remember that this is the 2nd most expensive investment in your life so don't scrimp on it.

And if you can, try to find one that may still have the maintenance warranty, even if its only for a few months or XX thousand miles. You never know what kind of bugs will pop up in the first month. For instance, I had my wiper blades and door seals replaced and I had a lower radiator hose leak that got fixed.

Good luck with your purchase. And welcome to the forum.

I have been looking at 530i and 525i's in the 2004-2006 range, I noticed some 06's come with the key fob and start/stop switch and some come with traditional key with the attached remote, what is the difference between them?

I think the one with the start switch (meaning your key doesn't have to be in the ignition) is the comfort entry or something like that. You will be hard pressed to find an 06 in your price range though, it will have a lot of miles or other "issues". I looked and looked and waited for mine - I refused to give up the options I wanted and I wanted low miles, so I finally found it and pounced.
My advice: take your time, look for one with the options you want and reasonable mileage to come available and just be ready to go get it when it is. Don't delay, because well optioned cars with good mileage and a decent price won't be around for long.

Very nice, but IMHO not worth it unless it's CPO. BMW has a rigorous certification process and if it's CPO then it's good. Plus given how expensive these cars are to fix the additional warranty given to CPO owners is really nice. Keep in mind, seeing as how it's only a 2006 (relatively young) there's probably a reason it couldn't get certified

+1 On the CPO warranty. I am happy with the way my dealer has handled warranty issues so far. The up front cost
of the car will probably be more, the selections may be limited, but IMHO it's worth investigating. Unless you're stranded right now and need a ride...keep looking. Member KROZI has had some expensive repairs covered under CPO warranty
that would have otherwise left a terrible taste in his wallet. Drinks are on KROZI!!!

Yes, I have read about the CPO warranty on BMW's site. I guess it would be smart to look for a CPO, there is also a chance that that 530i didn't get taken in for certification. But seeing as the car is still under 60k mls, wouldn't it still qualify for CPO? How much does certification cost?
I know repair costs would be expensive, but I know of a guy that will work on any vehicle only charges $50 an hour + parts which he gets at wholesale price for you and he does excellent work and is very careful. Just had him do my timing belt and water pump for only $380 parts included.
