I've had very few problems with my 545. Minor transmission complaint due to occassional slam downshift while slowing after a slight accleration at stop signs, but I have not had that issue in years - you learn how to avoid it. Just buy one that has been well maintained by one owner who didn't beat the crap out of it and you should be fine.

youre getting the 5er with the big engine - you are a complete wuss if you go automatic (and arent like handicapped and missing your right arm or something). SO HAPPY with my 6 speed - wouldnt trade it for the world. if you cant drive stick you should learn before you buy a beast like this.

flamed by the dude with 2000 posts and an automatic tranny. However I do apologize to handicapped motor enthusiasts everywhere, didnt intend to offend.
Honestly though I would fully reccommend the 6 spd - I looked at autos, smgs and manuals when I was test driving - I mean no matter what its a nasty car dont get me wrong but the 6-speeds were all priced a little higher making me believe you might even get a residual value kick because of it down the road. and downshifting in traffic in this thing... i dare you not to smile

and seriously if you dont know how to drive a stick you should learn more about driving before you put the pedal down in this thing - again, its a freaking beast.

Hey, What's wrong with MSG ? I have a 07 550i with an SMG close 70k miles now should i start worrying about it? This could be a heck of an expense if it fails...
One word of advise...DO NOT BUY AUTOMATIC. It think the BMW automatic transmission for e60's is proving to be a disaster. I recommend 6 speed manual. Don't even buy SMG.
Also make sure the engine has been maintained and that there are no oil or coolant leaks.
Features I wish I had in my e60 545i...
-Navigation
-Blue tooth
-Aux in
-Satellite radio
-Curtains
-Bi Xenon.
But I am loving my e60 even though the automatic transmission is the worst ever built by any car manufacturer.
Good luck.
