I know many of us (SMG's) have had this problem, but I have not heard any resolution. I started to lose my patience so I strongly complained and now hopefully it will get resolved. I sent the thread posted here to show that I was not the only one. I did the same thing with my Left Rear Directional problem, they have ordered a new socket assembly to be installed tomorrow.
I will keep you posted.

Mine doesn't seem to be doing it anymore. I'm not sure if it's related to the end of the cold weather (it seemed to do it more when it was cold and I had the seat & steering wheel heaters going) or if it's related to my recent CIP update.

My tech did take note that it was happening but didn't witness it for himself. I think he mentioned it to BMW but they recommended a software update first to see if it would fix it.

I explained to the tech about our thread here (minor SMG electical bug thread) and how there was one guy on RF that had his fixed by replacing the battery. He checked the fault logs and didn't see any issues relating to a low battery condition (like the guy on RF had) so again, he just did the software update and I've been pretty satisfied that things are good right now.

penneta, did your tech actually witness the problem or is he just taking your word that it's happening?

That's my theory too. I'm betting next fall/winter, there will be many more complaints about this problem and we'll all end up with new batteries...

I had the HUD blink problem only one night this winter. It went away and never came back. The explanation of a low battery sounds possible...

The tech did not witness it but they replaced my battery already in the winter of 2004. I had numerous software updates, although none recently. Mine also happens much more in the cold weather and maybe not at all in the summer months. It happens more when the car is cold.
I volt metered parts of my electrical system and it does rise above 15.7 volts during a shift (my meter only goes to 15.7v) and then returns after 3 seconds after. 14.5 volts - 15.7 + volts - 14.5 volts.

Thanks for the additional details pennetta. Keep us posted on the status of your case. I'm thinking that the true test for all of us will be closer to the end of the year when it gets colder...

They had the car for four days and I got it back today. Only drove it home from the dealer. The radio did not cut out, if it does not cut out over the weekend, as its supposed to get colder again, it should be fixed. They changed the radio grounds and re-crimped the connectors, they re-did the master ground to the engine block and they updated the software. The car feels faster but I was driving the 530 loan-a-car for four days. I will let you know after the weekend.
