Looks like the warranty was a good investment for you.

This seems to be a rather common problem across the BMW line. A colleague of mine just had this work done on his X5, under goodwill at a dealer, even though he bought the car from a third party and has never used a dealer. I guess he went there armed with a lot of write-ups on the problem (found by me on the internet) and a cool, level head. They covered the repair and sent him off with a smile. Car was out of warranty.

Moral of the story, just because they ask for $2,700 doesn't mean you have to pay $2700. Many dealers are very reasonable when it comes to helping with large repair bills. It never hurts to ask.
yeah this was a known issue with the all vehicles that had the m54 engine, there is a service buletin on it stating would needed to be fixed and which parts were to be replaced with insulated parts. what I dont' like is that instead of doing a recall for the know issue they say, wait to see if it breaks then fix it.

Absolutely! I encourage everyone to get one.

The good news is that they will cover the repairs...but they are going to send a rep to eyeball it first.

I struggle understanding a BMW having a valve cover gasket leak with less than 50K miles. WTF? Has BMW been benchmarking with companies like GM, Dodge, and Fiat?

There's a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?

I just had the same thing done to my 545. Valve cover and timing chain cover gaskets. While the engine was out of the car I replaced the water pump and clutch too.

its good to know.....

that in 2 thousand years that our e60s will be piles of iron/aluminum oxide but the valve covers will still be usable.

Really? Does the engine need to be taken out in order to replace those gaskets? Seems extreme.
