Brought it in because I saw wet control arms on both sides. I knew it was at least the valve cover gasket. SA said it was both valve cover gaskets which he said is pretty common and the timing cover gasket which they can fix for the low low price of...drum roll please...$2700!!!

Thank goodness(yet again) I have a third party extended warranty!!!

If y'all don't have one, best you get one!

Will

ps...i only have 47k miles.

It's called LDS. They are headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana which is pretty much local for me.

I just had my valve cover gasket replaced today under CPO warranty. I had oil leak due to freeze up from moisture in my oil, oil came out the valve cover gasket, oil cap, dip stick tube basically everywhere it could because the vent valve in the oil seperator froze shut. So they had to replace valve cover gasket, oil cap, dip stick tube, oil seperator and all hoses connected tot he seperator. $50 under CPO warranty or else the dealer said it would have been about $2000ish if no warranty.

Glad to see yours was covered too, hopefully you are up and running soon.

I should be covered...my warranty specifically says it covers seals and gaskets. We'll see. If not, write up anyone?

"because the vent valve in the oil seperator froze shut."
This seems to be a rather common problem across the BMW line. A colleague of mine just had this work done on his X5, under goodwill at a dealer, even though he bought the car from a third party and has never used a dealer. I guess he went there armed with a lot of write-ups on the problem (found by me on the internet) and a cool, level head. They covered the repair and sent him off with a smile. Car was out of warranty.

Moral of the story, just because they ask for $2,700 doesn't mean you have to pay $2700. Many dealers are very reasonable when it comes to helping with large repair bills. It never hurts to ask.

what does bmw expect to happen when their engineers get forced ( by cost cutting beancounters) into using plastic for valve covers. plastics creep and warp, no mater how much glass or carbon fill they have, that is why they're called plastics!

i also have a 2005 545i 6mt, has 37K on it......i don't even drive it anymore because i'm too worried about it breaking....

everyday i think about getting rid of it. oil leaks at 47K (sorry man, good thing you have a warranty, cuz i do not)......i don't need this sh*t. if i did i would have bought a 1981 chevy instead.
