All the 12v plugs in the car I have found (center console, rear console and the one under the glove-box) are all switched with the ignition key...is there one in the car that is live all the time regardless of key position?

No, because it would cause truble in the cars power management.

What you can do, and actually what I will do...:
Have your dealer switch the outlets to the "R" (Radio) position of the key/ignition... That's position 1. So you can stop the engine and still have power on the outlets, and you can use them when your car is parked without having the whole system running!

My dealer told me that can be done!

Might not be the best idea, though. I had my first low batt warning last week. Now that surprised me because I do not have DTL and even on automatic they are only supposed to use about 1/3 of the juice that halogens used.

I've noticed that the low battery warning comes waaaay too early. There is plenty of juice left in the battery and you allready get the warning...
But the car shuts it down before the battery is too low... So it shouldn't be a problem...

US spec cars have power outlets in the passenger footwell under the glove box, two in the rear center console and the one in the trunk - and a cigarette lighter next to the ashtray in the front.

German E60's don't have them in the rear center console and don'T have the one in the passenger footwell, only the one in the trunk and the cigarette lighter in the front...
