I've posted a few random questions here over the past couple weeks, and the friendly advice was very helpful. Big thanks - you have a great community here.

As a result, I am a very happy owner of an 09 535i, monaco blue metallic, sport package, premium, paddle shifters, etc. It has just about every option except nav, which is meaningless to me. 25000 miles, price was 33,500. I opted to get a non-CPO warranty through the dealer which brings me up to 100,000 miles of coverage on the big ticket items. I would have been a bit more comfortable with a CPO, but the dealers in the area were not giving me much in terms of price.

2 weeks ago I had an 08 535i, CPO, with less features for more money. I like this one more :-D

Are you certain the car wasn't CPO'ed ... you bought it from a BMW dealer ?!?! Once BMW CPOs a car that certification follows the car - it can't be "removed" by a dealer.

Did you have the VIN run or call BMW with your VIN#. You'd be shocked at the number of people who buy pre-owned BMWs don't know that many BMW warranties are 'married to their cars' at the time of the original new car purchase.

One of the most popular items sold to new car purchasers is the extended BMW maintenance program. Once assigned to the vehicle, going forward no matter where the car is bought and sold those "warranties" follow the car.

It also doesn't surprise me that some car dealers will ALSO sell an aftermarket warranty ... those are very very very high profit items - often bringing more pure profit to the dealer than what they might earn on the sale of a used car.

Good luck with your new-to-you BMW!

Definitely not CPO. It was bought from Audi of Chandler, AZ, whom I had bought an A4 from in the past. Penske, who owns the Audi dealership as well as BMW of Scottsdale, didn't certify it, however the full maintenance log from Chapman BMW showed a clean, very regularly maintained car, HPFP was not replaced yet. So it has manufacturer warranty until May, 2013, and I extended it to May 2014/100k. At the rate I drive I'll have used up the manufacturer warranty in 15 months (Sept 2012 or so). The sales folk claim they'll only certify a car based on "rigorous" criteria, but I'm pretty convinced they do it more on the dealer's belief on what kind of profit they can turn on the car, followed closely by how quickly they can move it. This car as a CPO would get a sticker of over 40k in this town. I'm also wondering, based on the cars I've seen, whether BMW prefers to have CPO's for 07 and 08 models at the moment? I figure in May/June they'll switch to 08 and 09 models. . .

Incidentally, for any Arizona people out there, and having dealt with both Chapman and BMW of Scottsdale, I would strongly recommend the former for reasonable, upfront sales people.

CPO is a PITA. you're better off with an aftermarket warranty. They won't replace anything unless it throws a code, whereas an aftermarket company will do so provided there's proof (ie alternator shows bad output on an oscilloscope, but doesn't set a fault code in the car's DME)

you can also choose to have the work done at an independent instead of having to go to the dealer.

I had CPO on my car and and aftermarket warranty on our 745 and the aftermarket one is 10x better.

i have a 3rd party warranty as well. luckly havent had to use it yet, but what is the procedure for using it say if the alternator went bad? call the shop and see if they even exept your warranty coverage?
