Leaving Texas and heading to Newport, RI for part of the summer. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best route to take or what to avoid?

Thanks

I can't help you with the best route, but look for my E60 at Goat Island Marina. I'm there most of the summer parked in front of a medium blue Sabre sail boat - the only thing that I own that's more beautiful than my 5er!

I lived in Boston for about 4 years and made the trip 4 times....best route was I30 to I40 thru TN, VA (84?) into PA thru NY in CT and over.....

Also had a summer house in Newport.....that was a blast.....actually headed there on Sunday for a couple days of meetings....

got the 4.6is from the Newport dealer....

Cheers,

318 turns in 11 miles: put this on your route plan: Tail of the Dragon.

It's at the Tennesse / North Carolina boarder and was featured in one of the car mags last month. Looks like a blast .... never done it myself.

Avoid I-95 in NYC at all cost. Actually, avoid driving through NYC at all cost...soory New Yorkers, but every time I go up there, I loose several hors of my life standing in traffic........

I just recommended to a fellow participant going to Sharkfest in Spartanburg next week. He is comming down from NJ. If I find enough time I may go up from the 'Fest to try it out. It was in R&T (May or June)

I live in NJ and drive to NC and RI often.

-Avoid 95 and the NJ Turnpike (Jersey sux all the way through)
-DO NOT GO THROUGH ANY PART OF Hudson River Crossings to NY (Tappen Zee, GW Bridge or any tunnel)
- You will risk breaking a rim, blowing a tire, or worse. These roads suck something big.
-I would take I-80 through VA up through PA
-This is a beautiful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the prettiest.
-Then take either I-84 or I-78.
-IN CT take the Merrit Parkway (This will be a blast drive with many curves and very scenic if there is not traffic)

-Eventually Merrit Parkway will lead you back to I-95 for the final leg to RI. This part of I-95 is nice.

Again avoid all of I-95 on the East coast. THere is nothing to see, but many speed traps, crappy petro plants and lots of traffic.

If you are going after Memorial Day, try not to travel on a Friday night, Saturday Morning, or Sunday night. Traffic in and out of Newport, and anywhere near the ocean from Maryland to Boston during summer weekends is twice as bad as normal.
