What was involved in changing the leather from black to this new color? Just buying new skins- is that easy? What is approx US cost of such an endeavor?

Go to realoem.com and you'll figure out how costly it is.
You'll need rear seat, rear back rest, 4 leather door panels, 2 front head rest, leather for front seats.

It guess it's more than a couple grand.

I like it. The color and texture remind me of a brand new baseball glove.

It all depends on how much.
New wheel tire packages are $6k+.
If new leather (say M style leather) is $2k, that's a great interior upgrade- to me.
Granted, I'm rediculous and should have just bought the M5. After all the money I've put into my 545i, I should be in an M5. Stupid.
Next car: M5, get it done, don't look back.
Wait, what about a 911 C4S

Cattman - the seats are not changed. They remove your previous leather or material and build in the new one. Cost was 1320 including the leather - and thats in euros. (multiply by 1.2 for USD). The leather is original BMW TERRACOTTA leather.

it was done in Belgium.

The original was like that as well for the comfort seat cause they side support etc moves quite a bit. Only the original was black so not so obvious to see.
