....and yes...you can avoid all of that and get a sequential or automatic.
A bit of more advice: When you practice heal and toe pay more attention at the beggining on the braking then on the rev matching. You don't wana find yourself in the back of the car in front of you. You'll find sometimes that you over-revved the engine so when you release the clutch you'll cause a slight puse of acceleration...that's also not good both for performance reasons and safety reasons. The same advice comes to left foot braking, carefull when you do it and there is some traffic or cars near you...also if not done properly you can upset the car balance very much...

I have to say - I wouldn't try to heel and toe on the road.

It's dangerous and there really isn't much point in doing it unless your are trying to power your way round a track.

I do try to get the back end of the car out a bit though

You see that's what i was talking about...that kind of stuff. Carefull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Try it on an empty car park or smth. I learned the technique only in traffic conditions in town, and nothing went wrong but u'll never know when badluck strikes. Again carefull!
...regarding the back end comming loose....can you say DAILY?
