Ya either Digital or analog I rather have a temp guage than that swinging MPG guage... JUST like the ///M5 setup!

Has anyone else noticed that the M5 is like PERFECT? in all shape size form function etc??

Yeah, I don't think in the M5 people will miss the "instantaneous fuel economy" meter much. I would gladly replace mine with a temp gauge.

I think the reason the MPG gauge was omitted from the M5 had to do with the fear of heart attack and/or stroke. Not the need to monitor engine temp per se.

[quote name='stafli' date='Aug 14 2005, 11:42 AM']Still, if you enter the cockpit of a late build of Boeing 7X7, you'll find a plain old horizon gauge - to be used in parallell with the computerized?? ? .

On a 777 the small backups are also digital

No! It (it's only one - on captains side) is analog, but it is presented in graphics on a separate display! The reading is still analog. The horizon is of course computerized on a 777, but that extra display is totally separated from the rest of the avionics (there are some additional redundant "gauges" for critical systems.

You wouldn't want the horizon reading in digits....

Interesting... after 2 test drives of a 545i and reading brochures, it didn't dawn on me until I read this post that the 5 has no coolant temperature gauge. Reminds me of the days as a kid when my family had GM cars that had "TEMP" warning lights. Once those lamps were lit, the car was already on the verge of spewing out steam under the hood. That was the late 70s. I'm sure by now that although the 5 lacks the coolant gauge, it's systems are WAY more sophisticated to alert the driver in ample time to pull over if temp starts to climb.

Nah. Not yet. I'll be a pilot soon when I have money and time to learn how to fly.

I beleive one of the most important instruments in a "general" car would be the engine temperature meter. After a short while with an overheated engine, the engine will crash ($$$) I know that iDrive/check control system is supposed to take care of temp readings and report overheating to me. But what if that fails? (we have all read about iDrive issues). It would be nice with some redundancy here (a plain old meter...)
Yes I agree and also the dipstick for the new engines too
