I received a letter from BMW saying my TCU may not be properly activated. Service Bulletin B84 01 09. The repair may take a full day. Anyone else receive this? I assume the reason the repair will take so long is a re-program of the car?

My dealer will re-program the vehicle to see if this fixes the TCU. If not, parts will be ordered. BMW will not ship the parts to the dealer until re-programming has been tried first.

Thanks for the notice. I never received a letter. Does the Service Bulletin state which cars / models are affected?

BMW told me about this recall back in October / November 2008. I never received a recall notice in the mail. I brought my car in b/c the CCC unit went and the TCU wasn't working as well. They told me that the TCU was covered b/c there was a recall on it and that I only had to pay for the CCC replacement. I only found out about the TCU recall b/c I made a stink when they handed me a bill that was alot more than what I was told when they called me to come pick up my car. I got the manager involved and he went over all the numbers and he was the one who brought up the TCU is on recall so he deducted that and he deducted a bunch of other charges that I should have never been charged.

The dealer did not find the recall notice from my VIN - I believe he had to contact BMW to confirm the service bulletin number info that I received in the mail. I don't know what years/models are affected. Mine is an early '07.

This is the single most common recall in all of BMW history. Seven (7) different Service Actions (BMW speak for non-safety related recall) since May 2007. My guess, many have got the letter or had it fixed and did not even know they had the problem.

It was determined that my TCU unit WAS at the current software rev. So, evidently the letter I received was a waste of time for all involved.
