TCU killer, what do you think?

Sorry, I should probably have put this in another forum, but I thought it might be of interest to the general public. I was also hoping that our BMWNA member was monitoring and might chime in. I was just told by my dealer, who was told by BMWNA, that pairing a bluetooth phone that is not on the BMW compatible phone list can severely damage the car's TCU and that replacement of the TCU will not be covered under warranty. The phone I am considering pairing is a Blackberry 8830 World Edition on the Verizon network. I thought the compatibility charts indicated phones tested for full functionality, not for possibility of TCU damage. If pairing certain bluetooth phones can result in TCU damage, owners should certainly be notified and warned. I have a hard time believing what I was told, how about you?
Thanks,
Bill

I've been using a Verizon 8830 World Edition Blackberry with my '06 550i since December '08, and it works great. I've also paired a Blackberry Storm and that worked fine as well (except for the Storm being a terribly designed device).
For what it's worth....

It is - to some extent - true (i.e. that BMW is saying this) and it is also true that some phones can cause problems with the TCU.
From my experience, I don't think the damage is permanent but it could be significant enough to require reloading software.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.
I don't see how pairing a phone via a wireless signal can damage anything. I'm using a 3 year old LG Fusic and i've never had problems with it paired to the car.
I'm calling BS as well.
