My 2004 530i delivered 12/12/03 now with 2900 miles sounds like a Ford Model T.
The stealer shop foreman states that "all cars sound different" and "this is normal" and "it's your electronic thermostat working".
I've listened to a couple of other 530's and none have this noise. You can hear it when you listen in front of the radiator.
Anyone else's 2004 5 series sound like this? or not?
If you vote in the poll, please add a reply letting me know what model you have and how many miles are on your ride.
Thanks.

Is happening all the time? I have an occasional tapping/fan noise on mine. According to posts on this forum its due to a mechanical belt guide. Its resolved by replacing it with a hydraulic one. Not sure what that means. I've give this information to my dealer so waiting feedback from them before I book it in to get if fixed.
AS you may have guessed I've got a 530iSE - UK spec.

I have heard that noise also, but have not brought it to my dealers attention as yet. As his standard reply is "that's normal" also, I expect I'll have to do my own reseach, as I did re: the non operation of the sun roof when the key is off or in position 1. I refer to the maual page 34, I believe where it says just the opposite of what the dealer told me! I never believe them now, I check it out for myself!

This noise is not there when the car is cold. After the car is warmed up it's there all the time.

Jimbo,
Sorry my mistake.
What is a belt guide and what's the difference between mechanical and hydraulic? Hope this is the cure for the noise I occasionally experience. Going to book it in the next few weeks.
Thanks

I had that noise in a E46.
It was the belt guide (and the belt that was almost broken).
I got both replaced and that horrible noise stopped.
