So its getting colder up here in the Northeast and I note that it takes a lot longer for the white dial to slide all the way to the right than before. Theres no issue with starting the motor, just takes almost ten minutes for the white dial to go from the 4.5K spot on the RPM meter to the 6.5K area...
Anyone else have this issue????????????????????????????????????????? Does this need to get checked out??????????????????????????????

Colder air = longer warmup times. Are you driving the car immediately after starting, or are you allowing it to idle until warmed up? Are you blasting the heater or is it off? If the heater is off, you drive immediately after starting, and you find it's taken longer than it ever has at the same temperature, a visit to the dealer wouldn't hurt. However, with the myriad of sensors and monitors, the car should report if warmup is longer than normal based on air intake temperatures, coolant temps at startup, and the like.

Adv Logic:
So I am driving off immediately, no idling [per the manual]. I do not blast the heater but wait a while before turning it on unless the mornings are really cold. Funny part is it didn't do this last winter, as far as I remember. Seems to be taking longer, and we're only hovering around the 40s in the mornings -- worried about whatll happen when it REALLY gets cold!

So the lower on the rpm gauge the tick marks are the colder the engine is? Is there an indicator if the engine starts to overheat?

Really, Mr. Obvious?

To the OP, the only major componant I can think of that would cause a hypothermic condition during the warm-up phase would be a thermostat stuck 'open'. Keep us posted (perhaps a video of the condition?)

All:
So I talked to the dealer and it appears that perhaps a heating element failure/coil beginning to die could cause this issue. On my wife's 2007 X5, the heating takes SECONDS literally, in the same ambient temperature. While I recognize these are different engines, obviously some of the heating technology is shared across models...
He reccs I bring it in for a diagnostic on the heating element which I will probably do later this week. It didnt take this long to heat last year, even when the temp was in the teens. Stay tuned and if you've also got this issue - chime in with your experiences...
