Check out www.realoem.com for part number info. The steering angle sensor is (if I recall correctly) a component of the SZL unit, whereas the SZL is the entire steering column switch cluster -- very big difference. You can either use your VIN for part search, or otherwise know the specific build month will help narrow down the correct p/n. The SZL differs depending on different options you have on the vehicle - like heated steering, lane departure warning, etc.

+1 on your VIN. Depends on what options you have such as active steering, heated steering wheel, etc. I had mine replaced near the beginning of the year under warranty. Mine was about $500 for the part only.

i input my last 7 VIN and it displayed my car was built on 05/2006, cannot find the angle sensor PN on all the part breakdown that it shows in realoem. also does it mean that my 530 is 2006 and not 2007?

Currently my DSC is coming on intermetintly.

According to my car's work order it's the steering angle sensor. I guess the sensor is incorprated into the SZL.

Anyways, they replaced the SZL or Switch Unit Steering Column AKA part number 61-31-9-111-997 (based on my car). The work order showed N/C for everything since it was covered under warranty. According to getbmwparts, it's about $530 MSRP or their price is about $424.41. According to the work order, the existing SZL had "Internal fault in SZL. Fault 10 times per test plan.".

It doesn't seem like a DIY since they had to do some other stuff such as:

Programming and encoding including CAS
Perform Steering Angle Sensor Adjustment
Performing DSC Adjustment
Initialize Tyre Failure monitor

BTW, to me it seems your car maybe a 2006. At least I'm guessing (I could be wrong) anything made after August, is made for the next year. Mine had an MFG date of 11/2005 and considered a 2006.

Your car can still be a 2007 with that build date... my 2008 550 has a 3/07 build date.

Similar to what Balbs mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if the entire SZL has to be replaced as the steering angle sensor is a part of it... although I have heard of people cleaning/resetting the sensor somewhere (don't recall where). The SZL install would not really be a DIY, as apparently they are very sensitive... my dealer toasted one while doing the diagnostics for my SAT/paddle-shift retrofit -- and programming might be required once in stalled (it's a computer module, like seemingly everything else in our cars).
