I have had DSC and 4x4 error message coming up and going away. Dealer made diagnostics and they said it's faulty steering sensor, SZL.

Now I have two options:
a) repair kit, which only contains optical sensor which will be changed into SZL control unit
b) Change the whole SZL unit.

Labour cost is the same (1hour), but part cost in alternative a) is about 50 EUR and in b) >500 EUR. Dealer recommends of course option b), but I'm not convinced. Dealer said that they have better experiences changing the whole unit, but I like to take the risk

Does any one have experience about repair kit?

Not sure if will help you or not, but there was a recall on the SZL sensors for 2005 & 2006 E60's in the US. Mine went bad and it caused all sorts of bizarre steering wheel behavior until it was fixed. I would think that BMW would replace these defective units gratis on a world wide basis. Might be worth some research on your part or at least a discussion with your dealer.

i had this steering sensor changed out for my 07 (my car was only 2 months old)...
it gave me chopping (and stiff) steering especially when driving slow
do a search and you should find some threads about it, not sure it's actually a recall or a very very common problem

Yes, I have done lot of searching and this is well known problem. Because almost all have got it under warranty there was not much mentioned which parts were replaced.

There has been recall in US, UK and Germany, but not worldwide. My car belong to group, which is mentioned in SB 34 04 06. It says that fault can be either in optic disk or programmin error.

-----
Faulty LWS

Contamination of internal optic disk - optic disk material change expected approx. April 2006.

or

Processor programming error (E60/E61/E63/E64 only) ? corrected on parts dated 03.12.05 (Dec 3, 2005).
------

I had a discussion with both with Dealer and BMW Finland and they are not willing to give it for goodwill guarantee, because my car is three years old and new car warranty is only two years here.

There should be many forum fellows with MY 2005-2006 car fixed based on SZL recall.

Could someone tell me did your BMW dealer used repair kit (optical sensor only) or did they replaced the complete steering sensor angle unit??

Dear Vesil,

I know you have had this issue some time back. I am now facing the same problem with my E63 630i - SZL faulty & I am required to change the entire Steering Column Switch Unit which costs a bomb. May I know what is this repair kit you have tried and succeeded? I would like to try that out first before investing heavily into a new SZL.....

Thank you!

Regards,
Vick
