Synchronised reverse
According to articles I've read, the manual gearbox of the E60 has a synchronised reverse, meaning that the reverse gear may be engaged even though the car is slowly moving forward.
However, I just disovered that the manual doesn't recommend doing it. I'm aware of the fact that it is not recommended on a car without a synchronised reverse - the sound is unbearable and I doubt doing it has any positive effect on the gearbox. Now, why does the manual not recommend doing it on this new gearbox?

I read the same article. The E60 will slide without any noise into R while rolling forward. I hardly ever do this only because 25 years of conditioning stop me from enaging reverse when the car is moving. BUT on the E60 it works. Now the fact that BMW put things like CDVs in the car lead me to beleive that they have plenty on reason (especially in the US) to question the intelligence and skill of some of their customers. Obviously you will damage the tranny if you go into reverse at 20mph.

This function it's available on purpose. I have read it in the BMW magazine some months ago. It's possible to do that because, this situation it's identified with a more faster/sporty way of reversing....
old school driving.
1.
complete stop.
shift in reverse, proceed to reverse vehicle.
2.
complete stop.
engage in first gear.
drive away.
upshift when you 'feel' the enigne speed reaches the next optimal/smoothest engaging point.
stick to it always. pratice it like a religion.
