I removed mine. I used a screw that is used on Ikea carcass kitchen units (I can hear the laughter). It's allmost like a grub screw but with a slight lip on it around the head. It's the screw used to fix the wall fitment brackets to the back of the cupboard. It also has a flat end on it so it doesn't protrude into the inlet void and they are very tight so no chance of them coming loose. I know it sounds like a bodge but they fit perfectly!

Dumb question, sorry. I have seen this term thrown around in a few forums, what is the Swirl Flap?

Don't worry, it's a diesel thing.
They are actual flaps that locate in the intake manifold. A vacuum pump controlles them.
There have been numerous failures, where the axle or the fastening of the flap has broken, and the swirl flap has been sucked into the cylinder ---> massive breakdown.

Epic;
Your car has the swirl flaps, but I'm pretty sure they are the "updated" model, with 0,5mm stronger axle (). Some sources claim, that there has no been any failures with these newer flaps, but that is BS. I just read from a Finnish forum written by an independent garage mechanic, that he had made an engine swap on a 2006 530dA this week because of a broken swirl flap.

So, it is up to you what you want to do. I guess you have seen my DIY guide on a DIY section...
