it seams that the flaps can break, if it does it will be sucked into the cylinder, its a "it can either break tommorow or it may never happen at all" type of thing

easy way to tell if you have them.
remove the top cover, only held on by 5 x 5mm allen bolts.
put a mirror under your right hand side of the engine( the black plastic thing is the inlent manifold)
use a mirror and look to see if they are there. i belive your car does have them. theres a very good thread on here, anafin
called major diesel engine failure. shows photos etc.
i have them on my 530d 54 man. with 39 k up.

sorry its ANZAFIN. HAVE A LOOK VERY INTERESTING WRITE UP.i personally didn't remove mine i did stopp the working but car seemed different some how. so my plan is to inspect them at 50-60 000 miles, they seem to go after 70 000. but other people say they are fine, espcially the modified one. which are in late 2004.
