I have read a couple of posts recently saying that bmw design the suspension around the runflats. So whats do they do is it firmer, lowered, is the geometry at a differing angle.
So i go to bmw and order a new e60 and request normal 16 inch wheels. Do bmw give me a different set up. No chance.
I think this information about the car being designed to run on the runflats is nonsense.
Does anyone out there have the technical info on what is different in the set up of the suspension of the car?

I don't have technical info but no-one I know has been able to produce anything either.
It's marketing talk... IMHO
They say the same thing about the E90 (they have to because it only comes with RFT and there isn't even room for a spare).
These cars seem feel so much better with normal tyres and one would think that if they suspensions were really designed for run-flats that when you switch to normal tyres they wouldn't feel right. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Can you still order 16" non-RFTs with the E60.
You can't here anymore ... the smallest is 17" and they are run-flat

You can get 16" on the E90 but they are run-flats in that size on the 3 series.

Yup, 17" is the smallest here too but w/ non-RFT, I think the Sport Package option comes w/ RFT.

the sport calibration is different and only comes with Runflats. They don't have to because of the spare, but they do.

So perhaps that set up is configured with Runflats in mind.

In Sweden you can still order 225/55 R16 with non-runflats. This is standard for 523i, 525i, 520d and 525d here after the facelift. For about $1000 you can get 225/50 R17 with runflats instead. Or you can opt for even more expensive rims.

Lucky you (to still have a choice at least)
Strange that here in Ireland the smallest wheel size is now 17" and it's RF only... if you ever get a chance to drive on our fine roads you will wonder what the BMW execs could possibly have been thinking....

We used to have the same system as you before where 16" normal tyres were standard (at least on the smaller engine cars) but for some reason they got rid of that choice a while back...
It's true that 16" don't look very nice, but if it's comfort you are after they certainly do the job
Now if we could just order 17" with non-run flats (from the factory) that would make a lot of people happy!
