Sunroof Earthquake

Has anyone noticed that there is a black metal strip at the front edge of the opening that pops up when you glide the sun roof open? Do I assume that this spring loaded mechanism is actually a wind deflector? It glides back under the roof metal when the sunroof is closed.

Yes, just about every sliding roof has one of them which is why I'm surprised that engineers still can't beat the buffetting problem on some cars...
