The foreman knew exactly what it was and confirmed it was a known issue and they fixed it for free. My understanding is that all they do is bend the metal wind deflector that pops up. That problem also caused my sunroof to pinch and retract. Call your SA.
Option 2

3M - Felt Tape

I had the same problem. The wind deflector was just touching the glass and while driving on a rough road it would make a tink or a clang noise. I opened the roof and observed that one end was a bit higher than the other. By twisting the deflector to make it relatively the same height, it no longer makes any noise. We're only talking about an eighth of an inch movement.

Just heard this on mine for the first time. Ugh. Thought I left rattles behind when I traded in my previous E39.

I have the same problem with my sun roof . I solved that when opened at tilt I just bump the tilt button a lilltle which causes the roof to move inward just a bit, problem solved no noise.

LOL, I just heard the wine glass effect on my sunroof too! WOW when these issues happen to one person it spreads to everyone!

I will take it to the dealer as well, if I can however fix it with 3M tape, I'm good. can someone post pics of their repair using tape?

Thanks

Maybe the rattling is the ghost of Jacob Marley Sytner trying to warn you about the sunroof drain tubes becoming blocked and dumping litres of rainwater into the boot resulting in all of the cars electronics becoming fried and a 5k garage bill

I'm coming to the conclusion that these sunroofs are far more trouble then they're worth with all their leaks, rattles and whistling wind noises.
