Hello everyone,

I've done a search, and haven't really found anything. When I close my sun roof from the vent position it makes a loud banging noise. Is this normal? Only seems to happen from the vent position. Doesn't happen if I retract it fully. Car is a 2006 530xi.

Thanks.

Yes, and I have the same E-60 . . . . in the rear of the sunroof there is a plastic piece, the width of the sunroof and maybe 1.5 - 2" long, that angles up when the vent is opened. That plastic piece has a tendency to warp over time and needs to be shaved or trimmed (albeit slightly). If you don't want to take it to the dealer because you're out of warranty, you could try to lubricate the offending plastic piece with some graphite or a bar of soap.

Either solution solves the problem.

I'm CPO'd still, but I don't think that would cover this. I'll go with the dry graphite approach first. Modify later if needed. At least I know it isn't going to shatter (the sunroof) at some point. I was concerned about the racket it made.

Your problem is the one in SI B 54 15 05.
I have a 2006 530xi (June 2005 build) and had the same problem.
Took it to the dealer and they did this service and it fixed it.
I don't see this in Cobradav's service bulletin listing, but I dug it up from my files.

I had that fixed on mine under warranty. I do still get a rattle though when the shade is open and you shut the door. If the shade is closed, it does not do it. My wife had brought it to the dealer one time for it, but they said everything was fine. We did not notice at first that it only does it with the shade open.

twh,

Thanks for the SIB. I'll have that looked at next time I'm in. It'll be interesting to see if they honor it on the CPO warranty since the comprehensive just ended a few months ago. I'm at 52k now. Ran out of time before miles.

I would go in immediately and ask them to do it under BMW Goodwill. There is an bulletin on giving dealers the ability to do stuff out of warranty and the dealer has a lot of room to work with that. I had something done after time expired on my original warranty, but miles were under 50K.

Dealer said out of original warranty, and that CPO doesn't cover it. Too bad so sad. I'm asking for a quote. I figure I'll play the BMW goodwill card if it's a big dollar amount.

SA said should cost around $250. And reminded me that the CPO is only mechanical. So I guess idrive malfunctions are out. Luckily I haven't had one yet....
