Sudden limp home mode and then engine stalled

Hello folks - has this happened to you?
The wife was diving back from the supermarket here in Ipswich Suffolk England in our 530i (auto) and the big yellow engine light comes on. The engine then cuts out on the roundabout of the busy main A12 road at rush hour. My wife has visions of idiots driving into her even though the hazard warning lights are flashing. She managed to start the car again but it cut out a further 4 times in the half mile to our house.
I started the car again in the morning but with an extended burst of the starter and the big yellow engine came on again.
I then drove to the local BMW dealership in my Fiat Panda and spoke to the service manager. It was agreed that I would have the car recovered to the dealership on a flat bed truck. The was duly done.
I get a call from the dealership this afternoon. Apparently there were no warning lights when the car was driven off the flat bed at the dealership and subsequently no error codes were found.
So £60 for recovery and £95 for diagnostics. The car seems fine for now.
Can anyone explain this strange computer malfunction?
