I found my power steering fluid low and need to top it off but I'm a hundred miles from a dealer. Is there a substitute fluid that I can get locally? Out of warranty now and I would think anything reasonable would work - or maybe not with BMW. What's special about CHF-11?

You have to use the same fluid.
Many German car dealers sell the fluid too.....audi, vw, Porsche, etc.
Sometimes napa sells it.

DO NOT go there! MUST use CHF-11 because depending on the model BMW, the fluid is used for other hydrolic devices on the car i.e. ASR. I got mine from NAPA for $18 or something like that.

Go to napa they have the Pentosin which is an OEM brand for $20. Call first to make sure they carry it in their stock. Some do and some don't due to the independent ownerships.

Also, check for the source of the leak. It shouldn't be low from consumption.

Thanks to all for your replies - went to NAPA and grabbed their last green can for $22. Is that nozzle thing supposed to pull out? Anyway, filled it per the instructions and checked the bigger rectangular reservoir next to it and it's low, too. Checked all the manuals and nothing states what fluid goes in there but there's a "200" on the cap. What does go in there?

That's your coolant expansion tank.
Any regular coolant will do to top that off.

Before you just use any old coolant, take a look here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=544418

I use BMW coolant to be safe, but I honestly don't know if it is really necessary. All the BMW aluminum alloys, seals, plastics, etc. make me nervous about using other stuff.
