See those white bars and your tachometer.. well those represent the temperature.. If it's cold they extend around towards 4k and if it hot they go the other way. It's supposed to make you wary of reving in to that area to stop engine damage when cold..

In practice, I rarely see mine move..

My understanding is that the outside edge of the rev counter lights up when the engine is cold to advise you of the rev limit. This then switches off when the car thinks it is warm enough. So there is no water temp gauge as such.

I think that is correct anyway, I am sure I read that on here somewhere!

SOLVED!!!! It was bugging the %^%*$ out of me. So if the white bars go higher beyound 4k, that means engine is overheating?

Thanks for this. Was killing me.....

I think the other way round..

The colder the engine the more white bars you'll see..

BMW doesn't think we're smart enough to have a temperature gauge...

The white bars only indicate when the car is up to normal operating temperature (from cold). These bars will not indicate a pending overheating condition, etc.

I'm sure there's an idiot light or warning on the CID when the car is overheating but there is no gauge to clue us in on what's happening in real time.

there is in the secret menus-do a search on the forums for secret menus-you can find a digital tach, speed and engine temp gueage

it shouldn't be on a secret menu. thats plain moronic of BMW. if the car is beginning to overheat I would rather have warning about it beforehand by observing the temp guage than having a dramatic warning light come on when the radiator is just about to explode.

The econometer should go and let's have a proper temp guage in it's place.
