This is weird. My car is at the dealer right now for this issue. It primarily made the grinding/rubbing sound when it was hot outside. Usually, between 85F-100F. At night
Last month they tried the lube it, but it the sound came back during the next heat wave here in Socal. Anyway, my SA said they are replacing the steering column (about $1000 w/o warranty).

I had this problem with my prior car, Lexus GS, I just had the dealer turn off this function (did it for free).
Can't the E60 be programmed to have this functionality turned off, as well?
When I mean turned "off" - I mean just the auto tilt up/down function - while retaining the manually adjusting function.

Well they replace my entire steering column, and reinitialized my Active Steering. The invoice noted some kind of bushing failure. Anyway, it's perfect now, and operates like buttah.
For some reason my Active Steering is much more noticeable now. No complaints here. I love that feature.
Oh, and I think the new steering column added some horsepower too.

I had this problem before too, mine only made noise on a cold start. The dealer replaced my steering column under warranty.

Is there def. no DIY for this? I'm not under warranty anymore because I drive like a madman and am over mileage now.

Za, I apologize in advance if I'm being obvious, but have you considered saving your seat settings to where the BMW steering wheel naturally falls default-wise? It's a pretty normal, comfortable position, and if you can't get this fixed because of $$, you'd be basically pretending that your car doesn't have tilt/telescopic adjustments.
I know on our X5 that we don't have it moved at all, and my 530i barely moves from where I put it to the default position when I stop. I think I could live without it if it meant spending a $1,000 instead for the minor adjustment I'd get in return. Just something to think about ...

Hey - no worries and no apologies necessary. This is my first BMW and I dont know it as well as I should. I'm kind of an ignorant get in and drive away like a maniac person. after 2 years, i actually set the memory on the seat haha.
I need to have my steering wheel at a certain height, and its pretty low I suppose. I cant deal with a high steering wheel. maybe i'm not understanding what you mean, but i think ur talkin about having it higher up so when i put in or remove my key it doesnt have a lenghty distnace to travel?
Its not that i dont have the money - it moreso i think its a crock of shiz to pay a grand to have something like that fixed. and it seems like every so often there's some new bs i gotta get checked out or fixed. lesson learned, i'll never buy a bimmer with more than 40k on it cuz u just dont know what its been through. next one will be almost new for sure.
I help pay for my little sisters college, and id gladly hand her that money over than to an SA for that bs.
