Strut Leaking?
#1
I just got new drilled and slotted rotors put on today was told by the shop owner that I had a leaking strut on the front left side, my car only has ~45,000 miles on it. Isnt it a bit early for a strut to fail? and also how can I check myself whether or not its really leaking cause I dont really trust the bodyshop

if it has 45,000 kms on it then it is very early for a strut to fail...monroe recommends to have the struts replaced every 80,000kms.. this is roughly around the life span of a sealed srut assembly...BMW recommends to replace the strut once you have experienced leaking...which in your case you have...if your car is still under warranty then i would take it to the dealer and have them replace it...you can easily check the strut yourself by turning the wheel all the way to the right or left which ever gives you enough room to look at the strut tower... what you are looking for is hydraulic oil on the strut tower itself...not the strut shaft inside the coil spring but the strut that bolts on to the hub...if it is indeed leaking this fluid is coming from the shaft inside the strut...if it is leaking i would get it replace as soon as possible....because your weak strut could cause premature tire wear and other suspension components to wear faster...as the suspension all works as one..and if one is bad then the others take the beating...good luck and keep us posted

Funny thing is my front left strut just sprung a leak. I actually saw the fluid on the floor in my garage since I've just started parking my car in the garage now that's freaking cold in the morning. Anyway, my car is an 06 and it has 48,000 miles. I don't blame BMW entirely. The roads in Mass. are so bad you would think it's a war zone. The struts can only take so much abuse.
The question I have is, should struts be changed in pairs, just like tires, or is it OK to drive with a new strut and an old strut on the same end? Will handling be affected at all?
