Lately, my left side tail light and the left front daylight running lights ( the halo around the main head light, just in case I am using the wrong terminology) seem to remain on, even after I have switched off the engine. This happens occassionally and I have to restart the car drive it backward and forward a little, switch off the engine and then it seems to turn off. Just restarting the engine and switching it off does not work!!! Looks like it is the onset of the famous (poor) electrical reliability of BMW's.

By chance, are you accidentally moving your turn signal lever after turning off the key? If so, you're turning on the standing lamps for one side of the car...

They do have them but, unlike Mercedes, it's harder to accidentally activate them -- as a matter of fact, most BMW owners don't even know about the feature and it's been around longer than the E60...they're a requirment by law in some countries.

(On the Mercedes, they're often activated by clueless owners or valet attendants who simply turn the headlight switch counter-clockwise all the way until it stops instead of stopping at the 12 o'clock position.)

AHA!!. I was aware of this feature, but never bothered to think that might be the problem. Also, it only happens when my wife exits the car after driving.....!!! I will ask her gently to refrain from hitting ..... I meant look out for the turn signal lever while exiting.

Thanks!. It seems to be the most likely reason.

Since you didn't know about the feature it can't have been a problem.

And now you've been given one!

I don't think it's a Canada thing, it's more of a European thing...
