Mine does it too, no particle filter.
1. It's too frequent (checked some other posts and the filter would appear to clean at around 1000 km.
2. The same happens on some vehicles without one fitted
Has to be a software glitch then????

Mine has done it for some time. Been through a number of software upgrades and still does it on 20.
Slowish speeds, car under load like going up a hill, light throttle and the rev counter oscillates about 500rpm.

How often does the filter clean itself?

Now maybe. But the earlier E60 530D's in the rest of the world with downturned tailpipes did not have the particle filter. Only came out when the straight pipes were introduced.
For some reason here, we still dont get the 530D with straight pipes.

Bobbin-man - Did you get the problem resolved ?
I only ask, as over the weekend my 520d SE developed exactly the same symptoms.
It's booked into the dealers, but I wondered it you could offer any pointers that I can steer them towards.
Any help much appreciated.

Bean - I'm now avoiding cheap fuel, and I think it's only happened once in the last 1000 miles (now done nearly 5000). I'm putting it down, as suggested, to the particulate filter burning off. I have found occasionally that when I park up there are noises from the tailpipe as though it's extremely hot - I've not linked this to the problem yet, but next time the uneveness occurs I'm planning to stop the car and have a good check round, listen, etc
One thing that's noticeable, is that the uneven running effect has gradually become "softer" as the car has done more miles. Possibly the horrendous effect of it early on was accentuated by a tight engine? It's not so much of a pain now that I need to head to the dealer, but I'm going to ask the relevent questions next time I'm in.
