Stopping thump/thud
The reason for the Mechatronics question is I feel a "Thump" after coming to a stop. I know "feel" and "thump" don't usually go together; but that's the best I can describe it. And it usually happens during my more "spirited" stops. When I feather-foot it, the sensation is less likely to happen. And thank you again for all of your replies. I love this forum. This forum solved my greatest annoyance with my car; that being the rattling radio volume control button on the steering wheel. Thanks for everything.

I'm trying to troubleshoot something I would describe the same way.
When slowing down to a stop, at 15mph I feel and hear the "thump". If I coast to a stop I can also tell that right after the "thump" the car shifts from 2-1.
If I do a stop while in manual mode and meep the gear in second I get no thumps.
My dealer kept the car for a while, confirmed the thump, and couldn't call anything really wrong with it. They checked another identical car and saw the same issue. They call it a "normal" characteristic of the car. I'm thinking more like a common problem.
So I am living with it for now.
A buddy of mine that did auto transmission work years ago says to him it sounds like the pressure that is used to engage the gears is too high and that is causing the "thump" when the pressure hits the piston much like water hammer in your pipes in the house. He is also a Bimmer fan and thinks if this transmission is used in multiple models, the pressure could be a compromise and perhaps a little too hight for this car and more right for another one.

Sounds very similiar to mine, except thump comes after the car comes to a complete stop. I can feel it thru the body of the car!
Are you guys feeling that slight "thump" or "jerk" right before the car comes to a complete stop?? If so I'm feeling same thing on my car. Spoke to my service advisor about it and he said it's normal but to me feels kind of wrong. And yes you can see the car shift from 2 to 1 when this happens. Maybe they'll find a fix for this issue and have all of us in to fix it. My car is a 2008 550i LCI with 39k.
