My house got burglarized this weekend and among the stuff that got jacked was my spare fob + valet key. Definitely need to get this taken care of (it's stored right now in a garage to which the burglar isn't going to have access, unless they work there) and am wondering what I'm looking at? Dealership isn't able to give me a straight answer though the parts guy told me the kit was $650 or so.

Anyone have to deal with this before? I found a post on bimmerforums where the guy wound up paying about $1800CAD back in 2k10 so I'm guessing it'll be around $1500USD now. Any ideas?

 

you could just change the fob only. have the dealer delete the other fobs info. but the thief will still have a hard key to manually get in, but wont be able to start car, or remotely open it.

 

My dad had his keys stolen in a house evasion along with one of his cars. The re-key and new fobs was over $1k but it was on a 6 series.

 

Yeah this is definitely not going to be a cheap fix, I wonder if you can claim it under your house insurance? The dealers charge about $200-$250 just for a new key, and you are talking not just keys but all lock cylinders as well. It may be cheaper to get the oem trunk finisher to cover up the trunk key hole and the keyhole delete covers for the front doors, this way you only have to replace the lock cylinder on the steering column? Are you going to worry about the glove box key hole as well?

 

I think you can as long as you have reported stolen on the police report. If not reported, you can amend the report and call up you insurance company to find out to make sure.

 

That suck bro. Home burglary seems to be on the rise in NYC. You should of been home with a legal fire arm, so you could of put two taps in that scum bag forehead.

 

His lock change was covered under his home owners.

 

I think a lot of these stolen fobs and keys are probably showing up on Craig's list or Ebay ... I suppose some thieves might try to track back to the cars, after the home theft, and try to drive them off to a chop shop or sail them off to another country.

 

for 1500 bucks to rekey i rather just have my car stolen and get the insurance money and get a new one
