My Ride: 2006 550i - Silver-Grey - Sprint Booster
Default

I'm looking to get aftermarket wheels and tires and want to stay around the same weight or lighter. First off, does anyone know the weight of a 2006 550i sport package wheel front\back separately and the weight of the wheels and tire combined? It looks like the really nice wheels weigh 27?ish pounds which seem a little high. My friend that owns an M3 said the weight of your wheels is very important. If you replace your wheels with something heavier you could have performance issue due to the car being some blah, blah, factory configure, blah blah, external weight is multiplied, blah blah, suspension is configured, blah blah blah. Oh yeah, blah blah blah. In the end, I only made out the best route is getting something forged which keeps the weight down.

Please share your opinions with me. Also, if anyone has a Silver-gray with really cool wheels, please send me a picture or link to a website. I'm leaning toward a black wheel with chrome lips.

Also, the tire I'm planning to get is Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport (Ultra High Performance Summer)

Any opinion on these?

Hi kr_550i

Look up this site,
there are almost all the BMW OEM wheels and the ET's and weights.

Ie the 166 M wheels weighs 13,26 kg's each (about 27 pounds).

The European tests has been very much in favor of the Potenza's.

I'm also very happy with my tires! But the Dunlop SP 1 Sport's are not good.

Your M3 friend is correct. Unsprung mass has a big effect on acceleration and even braking ability. Anytime you can remove weight from the wheel/tire combo its a good thing.

If you want to know the weight the simplest thing to do is just weigh it. Will take you all of 20 minutes. To figure out the weight of the wheel alone go on tirerack or the tire manuf site and that should tell you the tire weight. Subtract that from the total combo weight for wheel weight.
