Why do BMW UK still no make the x-drive option available in the UK. From November to March my 5series is extremely challenging to drive because of the high torque and summer tyres. I eventually settled on winter tyres, but in the UK the knowledge of these isn't available. To have x drive AND winter tyres would truly make BMWs the ultimate driving machine. Most of my friends buy Audis for that reason alone!

I guess the problem with X-Drive in the UK is something to do with the cost/complexity of getting a steering rack to work around the driven front wheels from the other side.

I can't think of any other explanation.

That said I wouldn't buy one anyway, I had no problems in the snow last year. The traction control was pretty impressive, the difference with it on/off was significant. I would consider some winter tyres though after Evo's tests with the XFR.

Customer power can make it happen. Everyone that wants one should go into a dealer, sit down with a sales associate and say I want to buy a 5er. Choose your engine option, colour etc and then say you want X drive. When they say it's not available, say "Oh, OK ... do you know where the nearest Audi dealer is?". There's only so many times they'll allow this to happen without getting annoyed and bug headquarters to make them available. Start a facebook group. Start an online petition. But whatever you do, don't sit back and let them make you accept a 2WD when you want 4WD.

So, would it be so bad to buy a good set of winter tyres and enjoy the 5er at winters also!

Excuse my ignorance but do winter tyres make the E60 drivable in the snow?
I am only asking as when i enquired at a local tyre fitters i was told to save my money (there loss) as the e60 is no good in snow/ice even on winter tyres.
When the weather got bad I had to borrow the son-in-laws passat as I couldn't get the E60 up a hill to get to the main road.

It's handles great in snow with correct tyres. But... It's not only the tyres. Driving in snow/ice is a thing you have to learn.

You have hit the nail on the head ! People are always quick to blame the car rather than the driver.
