I have the steptronic transmission and on 2-3 occassions when stopped at a light on steep hills I have noticed a slight rolling back of the car when i let go the brake to press the gas....all other automatics I have had in the past, have always held the car in place. Is this normal - have others experienced this? Could it be a sign of a transmission issue? Thoughts/comments?

there is something wrong.....
BMW steptronic does not roll a single inch backwards while stoped at a steep hill..... in fact you can just stop and release your break totaly in a hill stop. the car will stop totaly.....
in cases of small hills the car might slghtly roll forward actually....
no need for break in hill stops with stept at all....

Looks more like you have a problem with your gearbox...

What if it was a really steep hill? I've been on a number of 'mild' hills and the car has stayed still rather than creeping forward but because the of the way the torque convertor works I would of thought backwards rolling was possible?

Mine does exactly the same on steep hills nothing to worry about quite normal, if the hill is steep enough the car will roll backwards. My last 3 BMW's have all done the same

Hmmm mine stays still on steep hills for I think 3 secs. I have tried nunmerous times and it has never rolled back, in parking structures, mountain roads, etc. Or maybe I didn't try steep enough.

I shouldn't worry about it at all - presumably you could hold it in position with very light pressure on the gas?

Thats what I'd do.
