This morning had a opportunity to push my E60. When I reached around 125-130mph, driving with steptronic in 6th gear. My car jumped back to 5th gear as I continued to accelerate. Each time I tried to go back to 6th it would go back to 5th. Anyone know why?

I would like to mention that I surpassed 140mph still running smooth

And more importantly, which Autobahn did you find that was open enough to do this?

I was in DS, if that is what it is called. I was shifting manually with the steptronic. As far as autobahn that are strait enough. There are two here: A5 between Darmstadt and Frankfurt, about 20km. There is A67 between Mainhiem and Darmstadt where I was. Both are strait, you could land a plane if it was not for the bridges

just be careful in ohio. the police think speeding is worse than nearly any other crime possible. it's got to be their biggest source of income

If you are in the sport mode the car won't put the 6th gear.
It will go until red line in 5th.
In the 730d i tried lots of time and in the Sport mode the car was always in 5th and speeding 240km/h.
Maybe that's the reason you can't use the 6th...
In the 530d i have manual and in 6th it goes until it stops going up at 250 Km/h...

I think the 6th gear is more of an overdrive gear which is only used when driving in the normal D mode. You can also manually select it as you did but I think your car will downshift as soon as you try to accelerate. When not accelerating (e.g. driving at let's say 220 km/h) and keeping that speed you should be able to put it in 6th gear manually and maintain it. Please let me know if this is the case, if not, I'll see what my car does!

This series of posts prompts me to ask if anyone knows that there is torque converter lockup? I usually can feel a car (American) come out of lockup but can't sense it in 530 with steptronic in D or DS or 5 or 6. Perhaps the answer to my question would help answer the original post.
