Heard that it doesn't shift in ds mode into 6th. correct? how fast would the car be near redline in 5th? I ask u beacuse i have the car only for 2 days and didn't have time to test it on long journeys.

[/quote]From my experience, in DS mode & doing between 140 & 160km/h on the freeway it will not change into 6th.
Not sure what the max speed is in 5th.

If you lost manual mode, you'd have to add some sort of "winter" mode to allow you to start off in 2nd.... so you might as well stick with the full control of a manual option.

Or they could provide a "winter/summer" switch that programs the car to start in second or first.

What is DS mode, is that when you move the shifter to the left of D? I also like manual mode aka tiptronic. I like down shifting with it, and upshifting close to redline. I also find my 525i pulls really well in 3rd gear with steptronic, unlike in normal "D".
Do you guys notice that it sometimes shifts for you anyway, that is kind of annoying no?

1. I get my best gas milage using manual shifting.
2. I like to start in manual mode. Then, I have the ability to start off quickly and have the car remain in 1st for an "extended" period without pretty much flooring it at the outset. If, somewhat later, I decide to accelerate to the maximum, then no time is wasted because of downshifting.
3. I don't want my car to go into 6th without my permission. So, I drive in SP and put the car in 6th when I want to via manual shifting.
4. I like the idea of a clutchless manual. That is, I like the control and flexibility of a manual without having to fiddle with a clutch--see all the reaons others have given above. I do enough clutching in my Z06.
Still, I would like to see the step changed to allow for:
1. Crisper automatic shifting in DS and crisper manual shifting;
2. Ability to keep tranny in desired gear when shifting manually unless potential damage threshhold is exceeded (i.e., especially let REV limiter shut me down if I exceed RPM limit and not shift for me);
3. Automatic return to DS with downshift to M1 after manual shifting has been engaged and a full stop is reached; and
4. If not 3, then automatic downshift to M1, not just M3, after manual shifting has been engaged and a full stop is reached

I agree in the summer but disagree in the winter. I think Manual mode when snowing is great. Special when going up/down a hill
But like many, I rarely use it for any other purpose. I like SD when in a nice road with tight corners

on the 545, manual mode is great when passing / accelerating hard.
Try down shifting 2 gears - and putting the pedal to the floor- you will become airborne, almost.
Of course an upshift will be reqd - soon, but by then you should be just about at light speed.
