the button has been pushed in by previous owner, and it doesn't appear to be removable from the airbag. Has anybody had this happen, found a solution, and would the replacement covers on ebay work (ie would it cover it in such a way you wouldn't be able to tell it's a cover).??

thanks

Welcome to the forum.

This issue has come up more than once -- do some searching and I think you'll see some additional information...

thanks, searched 8 pages and all I could find was "you can't do it", or install a "sticker" over it. If anyone has any updated info, love to hear it. If not, thanks anyway.

I have the same issue and not found a solution.
Do not know if this has been told before, but this is a classic DYI for smooth dents in the body (And could be applied on this one as well. But with different tools)

Use hot melt glue.

Take a medium sized nail, head down against button!. Put a small dot of melted glue on the button, push the nail into the glue.
Wait a couple of minutes, and then gently pull the nail until the button pop up.

To remove glue, The glue on the button will come off, just wait until it is cool, and take your nail and gently start work on it

Not sure if they'll help much but here are some threads I found on the subject (in chronological order)...

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=4310
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=4393
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=10786

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=53172
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=57273

I scanned some of these threads quickly and it appears as if the steering wheel cover may need to be replaced, not the entire airbag assembly...

Same happened to mine after a repair to the steering. Whole bag has to be replaced as the badge has to be attached properly to ensure that it doesn't fly off when the air bag deploys.
